I've had many brands of vanilla coffee, and the Melitta Cafe Collection Parisian Vanilla Ground holds up well against the others. It's very smooth and pleasant, with clear vanilla flavor. I love it with honey and cream.

Everyone else that tried it (all daily coffee drinkers) found it enjoyable, and particularly commented on the aroma. No one had anything bad to say about it.

I love this Melitta coffee. I'm a big fan of Melitta coffees in general, but this one is fantastic. First of all it smells fantastic as it's brewing. It fills the entire house with a beautiful vanilla aroma. I normally put some creamer in my coffee, but for my review I drank a cup black. The coffee is very smooth and has no bite to it at all. Even without cream, it has a very creamy texture to it. It's bold without being overpowering. I highly recommend the Melitta Parisian Vanilla coffee.

Separately, my husband drinks coffee every day but does not appreciate coffee the same way I do. If you're this type of coffee drinker I recommend saving your money. While my husband loved the aroma of the coffee, he didn't even notice the difference in flavor between his usual generic brand of coffee.

Great for coffee lovers, ho-hum for an average coffee drinker.

I have always wanted to try Melitta Coffee, so I jumped at the chance to sample this product. I have to say, it is one of the best coffee blends out there. I love the aroma...it has a strong vanilla odor but it is not overwhelming. The way the coffee smells out of the package is exactly what it tastes like. This is a very bold brew with a satisfying vanilla flavor. It is a darker and full-bodied brew, and I loved how smooth it tasted. I highly recommend this flavor to anyone thinking of trying it.

PROS:

The vanilla flavor did not overpower the coffee taste at all, it was actually quite balanced. A lot of flavored coffees go overboard with the concept and thus have a tendency to taste artificial, but this particular blend kept it's perspective.

The coffee had a rich, dark grind but brewed up like a good breakfast blend. It had a nice aroma right out of the bag and made for an inviting smell in the kitchen as it brewed.

CONS:

The bag was impossible to open without cutting. The restrainer tie broke off after about 6 uses and I had to use a bag clip to keep the bag closed. In other words, they used GREAT glue to seal in the freshness, and then used an adhesive that was about as effective as old bubble gum to help KEEP the coffee fresh once the bag was open. Can't quite figure out the engineering on that one.

PRO AND A CON DEPENDING ON HOW YOU LOOK AT IT:

This coffee, like ALL Melitta coffees has a VERY fine grind. It's made for drip coffee makers that use a filter, which is no surprise since Melitta takes credit for inventing the modern paper cone filtration system used in basket filter coffee makers. An extra fine grind means that you can get away with using a bit less coffee, but it also means that you can't use something like a Bodum press to brew this coffee.

OVERALL IMPRESSION:

A solid 4-star coffee. The frustration with the packaging kind of got to me, but once you get past that, it's pretty good stuff, and well worth it if you like flavored coffees.

I enjoyed this coffee very much, but I think it's important to be clear about the details of the taste, and how to brew it for maximum enjoyment.First, this coffee has a full bodied flavor similar to French Roast. The taste of the coffee itself is deep & rich. As such, the vanilla flavor is subtle. It's not as "prominent" as flavored coffee you buy in the supermarket (that coffee tastes "heavy & fake" in the flavoring department). If that's how you like your coffee(with heavy flavoring and less "coffee") you will NOT enjoy this coffee. This isn't the cheap Vietnamese coffee that everyone's been drinking since most companies have stopped using Columbian coffee. Vietnamese has a very lightweight flavor (no "body") and takes on a much stronger taste with artificial flavoring.

This coffee doesn't taste quite as good when percolated through an electric machine. It's still great...but the flavor gets diminished this way. Try a French Press or better yet, a "pour through" gadget (see the manual coffee maker below) made by Melitta... instead. This way of making it makes a coffee that...well....blew my socks off.

For coffee addicts & lovers...you'll understand this coffee. For those who think Yuban is great, probably NOT. Personally, I loved it and will be back for more. I would have given it 5 stars if the taste was the same with electric brewing as it was with more "rustic" methods using boiling water. As it is..making it by the cup made alot of difference and that's why my review gives it 4 stars instead of 5. Most people will use an electric coffee maker, and depending upon the brand (Krups would probably be ok) it may be less than superb.

The coffee is excellent, with a smooth taste and pleasant aroma. It did not have that bitter/plastic aftertaste you find in a lot of decaf coffees.

The grind is very fine, my cheapo coffee filters let a little bit of the coffee through. Use good quality filters with this coffee.

It was difficult to open the package, and the little wire closer fell off after the second time. However, I understand why coffee is packages this way, to minimize the exposure of the oils in the coffee to air. And of course a fine grind has a larger surface to mass ratio, making it age even faster. So I forgive them for the packaging. You really need an airtight opaque container to store this kind of coffee.

Personally I like to grind my coffee right before using, but the convenience and taste of this Melitta has convinced me that there are other options.

I'm not a coffee expert, but I know a good tasting coffee when I drink a cup. The Melitta Riviera is a light roast, with a nutty and creamy flavor. The aroma is just exhilarating. It left a nice aroma throughout the house, almost made it seem like I was in a coffee shop. Unfortunately, it is just decaffeinated and did not give me the jolt I need in the morning.

The packaging caused some problems for me. The seal is excessively tight. I've never had this problem with Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts, Peet's Coffee, or Meijer packs. With the Melitta, it was so tight that when I did open it, the bag tore apart and spilled a lot of the ground coffee onto my kitchen top and floor. One could argue that this tight seal packs in all the flavor, I could argue that if it were easier to open I wouldn't have spilled maybe 3 days worth of coffee grounds onto the floor.

Pros: Light roast, excellent aroma, nutty and creamy taste

Cons: Decaf (arggghhh) and hard to open pack

Riviera Sunset Decaffinated Coffee, from the Melitta Café Collection, is a good coffee for that first, morning cup of coffee. It is a South American blend for those who prefer a brighter more acidic kind of brew, but is still well balanced and make s a fine cup of Java.

The coffee comes in an attractive, black bag with a bag with the now ubiquitous air valve. The folks at Melitta know how to compact coffee for travel--all ambient air was sucked out of the bag, shrinking the usual size of the 10 ounces from its expected size, to a small, dense brick. Cutting open the bag, there was an audible hiss as the bag seemed to expand to double its size. The aroma was intoxicating--think deep coffee with chocolate hints and with nothing acrid about it. The bag does not indicate the level of the roast, but on inspection the coffee appears to be a darker roast (somewhere between a `full city' and European). The bag states that this is an extra fine grind, but on inspection it seems to be less powdery than you'd want for fine espresso, and is more of a fine grind. This, I imagine, is meant a compromise so that the coffee is suitable for both the common drip coffee machines that use a filter or could be used with an espresso machine.

For some reason, the instructions indicate that you should use two level teaspoons for every six ounces of water. I'm not sure how they drink coffee in Europe, but in the US coffee machines measure by the cup. This leads to a bizarre ~2.7 teaspoons of coffee per cup and (to my taste) a slightly weak cup of coffee. In spite of the grind, I'd stick with the usual 1 tablespoon per cup proportion for your drip coffee maker and work up from there. Your intuition should serve you well, and I'd stick with your usual measurements (I'm one of those `heaping' tablespoon per cup guys).

The coffee definitely shows its South American origins. In spite of the darkness of the roast and richness of the aroma, the coffee once brewed is more light, breakfasty, and slightly more acidic than I imagined it would be. Given the type of coffee that it is, it also might have benefited from a slightly lighter roast. Still, it is a well balanced South American blend. It lacks the distinctiveness of a single origin coffee but given that it is a blend has a more rounded, less biting flavor. Although decaffeinating can sometimes sap the bold flavors of a coffee, this coffee still has a lot of personality and a distinctive taste.

This is not for the pure coffee lover who likes a dark, earthy, and oily cup of java that can basically stand on its own. This coffee is more for people who like to add a lot of buffer--a fair amount of milk and sugar or one of those Torani syrups (e.g. Torani Syrup, Vanilla, 25.4-Ounce Bottles (Pack of 3)) for a little extra flavor, for those who like those kind of things. It also makes a great iced coffee. If cold brewed, the coffee loses its tannic edge and is more smooth and sweet, but also loses a little personality in the process. (I did not try using this in an espresso machine as I do not have one, but I don't think that it would yield a great espresso. Concentrated, I think the acidity might become overwhelming.)

All in all, this is a fine blend of coffee at a fine price. With a little experimentation on the proportions, it yields a fine cup of breakfast coffee.

First, let's talk about the packaging. I hate when coffee come packaged in bags like this. They're quite cumbersome and in my opinion, do not keep the coffee fresh enough.

As for the coffee itself, this was one of the better tasting decaf's I have had. It has a very rich flavor that you do not normally find with decaffeinated coffee. It has a wonderful aroma as well. Very pleased with this product.

When it comes down to Melitta, they definitely have known for all this time, what it takes to really made a great cup of coffee. With their Cafe Collection, they definitelly bring out the best in flavors for all kinds of coffee lovers, and that is really a strong aroma. With their Rivera Sunset, they definitely bring out a decaffinated taste that feels like it is full of pep at the beginning of the morning. I really love it. The taste is strong and the intimate aroma is just delightful. All in all, I absolutely recommend this as a great treat in the morning to wake up and enjoy.

Eight O'Clock Coffee Decaffeinated is the best tasting coffee. I have served my friends this coffee and they have agreed that this coffee is wonderful.

I just wish I could order the larger bags in the ground coffee style.

Well, I sent this to my grandmother as the stores she frequents in Florida no longer carry 8 o'clock coffee. Great service with Amazon, it was shipped quickly and arrived at her door in great condition and nicley packaged. It is the coffee that she loves to drink and she was incredibly suprised/happy to receive the 4 pack. Why 4 stars instead of 5 well, per pound this is acutally more expensive than I would pay for it in the local grocery store...without having to purchase 4/12 oz bags at a time. I checked out shipping and even adding that in, this was no bargin. One would think by purchasing in "bulk" the price would have been better / more competetive. I decided to purchase from amazon due to convience as I was incredibly busy at the time, not sure I would do it again with this product.

The coffee taste is truly amazing for those that can't drink regular coffee. It has an aroma to it that tempts you to drink more. The price definately can't be beat after purchasing some at the grocery store if you can even find it in the store. I tried to purchase some at a Winn Dixie. They only sell coffee beans in this brand but they didnt have a grinder to grind it up. That was the best thing that could have happened since i went online to Amazon.com and found it cheaper than i would have been able to find it. And it was ground up coffee. I will definately be visiting this website again and purchasing this awesome tasting coffee.
